TDP About

I am not a single parent. I do the parenting work of two people. Therefore, I am a double parent.  I take the view that those who parent as part of couple (a parenting pair) are hemi-parents. That is to say, they are one half of a parenting pair because they have a parenting partner with whom they share parental responsibility.

Every parenting situation – double parenthood or otherwise, is as unique as the individuals, family members, and social circumstances of which it is comprised. While parenthood presents challenges and rewards to all parents, double parenthood not only comes with those very same challenges and rewards – it has its own unique set, too. For the most part, double-parenthood is very similar to partnered parenthood, but it is also very different – for the parents, and for the children.

The Double Parent hope to encourage any and all single DOUBLE PARENTS to be proud of themselves as they raise their kids because I think we are all doing the best we can and that having only one parent around doesn’t need to be a loss. I hope to shatter the myth and of the broken home and help fellow DOUBLE PARENTS replace any stigma or shame with pride.

Here, as well as on facebook and Twitter, I hope to explore and discuss the concept and reality of double-parenthood, and the life we lead as human beings. I hope the discussions contained herein will interest ALL parents, and ALL people.

TDP Reviews:

As a double parent, I am very careful where I spend my money. In these uncertain economics times, we all should be thinking twice about how, where and why we spend our money.

I test and review products and services that will not only be useful and interesting to my readers, but will provide them with good value for money. My careful testing and reviewing of products and services helps my readers to make informed choices when it comes to spending money.

Wow!!! That’s it! THAT’S what we are! Finally someone has said what I’ve known all along-single parenthood relates to whether you have a partner or not, it doesn’t relate to what we actually DO on a day to day basis! Thank you!!!

  2. A double parent is a parent who fulfills all the responsibilities of raising the children, Claire. That’s why I prefer the term ‘double parent’ – it most accurately reflects how we so-called ‘single parents’ shoulder all the responsibilities of parenthood. Because parenthood relates to our child/ren, not our marital or relationship status.

Greetings from a fellow Double Parent! Been here for years, will be for another 50, and so far, it hasn’t gotten smoother—it’s still a bumpy ride. So glad to find you; looking forward to reading more.

My mom was definitely a double parent. I don’t know if I could do it myself. Sounds like you have it under control though 🙂
Thanks for following my blog. You have a great one here!

  5. Hi! Glad you to meet you. Yes, life as a Double Parent is very bumpy. I have been a DP for almost six years now and it’s been (and still is) a VERY bumpy ride. I’m looking forward to get to know you and sharing my ideas.

  6. Thanks for the comment and follow. I’m looking forward to getting to you know. I think I have things under as much control as is humanly possible for one person. The chaos definitely comes from “outside forces”.

“The double parent,” heh! That’s a keeper idea!!

  8. Thanks. I happen to agree!!! Mind you, it took a few years of doing double the work before I realised that’s what was going on!

I can sort of relate… for a while, at work, I had the workload of three after I had to pick up the load from losing two people.

Having dated single mothers (and marrying one for a while), I have infinite respect for single parents!

You will find that my topics are all over the place … as noted in the sidebar.

  13. I saw that – wine, ballroom dancing etc – all make for a well-rounded individual and interesting reading. 🙂

Hey DP, Loved having you tweet my Nourishing the Heart audio and then to follow you here. Not being a parent I am in awe of those who take that path on. Your point is well taken. You are being a double parent. Thanks for making me aware of this and giving me a resource to send people to.

  15. Great blog – thanks from a fellow double parent.
Not through choice, but making the best job of it that i can –
also so proud of my children, and grateful for what is good –
even if I’m too tired to think about it at times!

All the best to you and all fellow double parents –
good to have a label and be recognised for what we are –
    keep going!!

    Emma. xx.

  16. Hi Emma,

Thanks for taking the time to stop by, read a little, and comment.

I am not a double parent by choice either. Most of us aren’t. I would also say (with a little hesitation) that even those who think they are by their own choice, wouldn’t be had they been partnered or their circumstances were different. Those people would then be double parents by Hobson’s Choice – double parent or not being a parent at all.

I wish you all the best too!

    The Double Parent.
